Inspired by the concept of rhizomes—a term traditionally denoting underground plant stems that grow in complex, interconnected ways—this exhibition engages with the philosophical frameworks of Deleuze and Guattari. Their emphasis on diversity, plurality, and horizontal power dynamics challenges conventional hierarchical or binary structures, offering a lens through which to view contemporary graphic design.
The 2024 Design Thesis Exhibition from the Department of Art and Art History at Florida International University (FIU CARTA) showcases a diverse array of graphic design approaches, reflecting a spectrum that ranges from traditional techniques to cutting-edge contemporary styles. This multifaceted exploration encompasses both familiar design formats and innovative sculptural installations, emphasizing the varied creative interests of the Fall 2024 graduates.
Particular attention is given to illustration and typography, with works that address pressing themes such as social equity, ecological awareness, personal expression, critiques of consumerism, and the implications of artificial intelligence. Each piece is a testament to the diverse media and techniques employed by the designers, inviting viewers to engage with their ideas on multiple levels.
Curated by Silvia Pease and Ozan Atalan, the exhibition will be held at DORCAM, located at 8300 NW 36th Street, Doral, Florida. The opening reception is set for November 15th from 6-9 PM, with the exhibition continuing through November 20, 2024. Join us in celebrating this vibrant convergence of thought and creativity.
